Is 2017 the wettest year on record for NYC area? Persistent wet, stormy weather pattern could mean wettest year on record for the NYC area if pattern persists for rest of 2017

Thanks to the persistent, unrelenting Jet Stream trough since mid-March 2017,the whole year of 2017 could end up being the wettest year on record for the New York City metro-area if this weather pattern not only continues through the rest of the 2017 Summer season, but into the fall/autumn and the 2017 holiday season (Labor Day through New Year's). Here's the daily rainfall tallies for the city of White Plains,NY for the whole year of 2017 so far,as of 12:15AM,EDT,August 23,2017 from accuweather.com

Persistent, stormy weather pattern gripping the NYC area for the fifth straight month

Since the Spring 2017 season began, practically, the Jet Stream has been practically stuck in a pattern that has let the Eastern two-thirds of the US to remain persistently wet, stormy, raw and cool across two seasons now as though it's been a particularly steamy summer so far, this has led temperatures to trend near or slightly below normal this summer (Note the lack of 90-degree temps so far this summer and the fact that the highest temp for 2017 so far occurred in mid-May,just over a month before the 2017 summer season even officially started, for example). Philippines to China: New tropical threat may follow Typhoon Hato

On the heels of Typhoon Hato, residents from the Philippines to southeastern China and Taiwan are being put on alert for a new tropical threat.
While there are no organized tropical storms or typhoons roaming the western Pacific Ocean in the wake of Hato, an area of disturbed weather will attempt to change that in the coming days.
"This area could become better organized later this week or this weekend near the northern Philippines," AccuWeather Meteorologist Tony Zartman said.
Development is possible over either the warm waters of the Philippine Sea or the northern South China Sea.
Tropical Aug 22

Where any future organized storm will track is far from etched in stone, but residents and shipping interests from Luzon Island in the Philippines to northern Vietnam, southeastern China and Taiwan should remain alert for possible impacts.
Wind, rain and seas will increase around the center of any budding tropical storm or typhoon.
"Locally heavy rainfall is expected over portions of the northern Philippines over the next couple of days regardless of development," Zartman said.
If tropical development occurs in the Philippine Sea, Luzon may also face damaging winds and an inundating storm surge.

Development in the South China Sea would limit the risk for damaging winds to southeastern China and/or northern Vietnam.
Currently, the main concern for Taiwan is for flooding downpours to stream in as any storm bypasses to the south, similar to what happened with Hato. If the storm forms farther north than latest indications, the island may face a direct hit.
"The greatest concern at this point would be that a tropical system tracks toward the same area of southeastern China that will be dealing with Typhoon Hato into Thursday," Zartman said.
The area will be more susceptible to flooding, mudslides and damage on the heels of Hato’s torrential rain and strong winds.

Risk of wildfires, poor air quality to increase in western US as heat builds

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Temperatures will again be on the rise over much of the western United States and will raise the risk of wildfire ignition and poor air quality this weekend into early next week.
"The upcoming surge of heat will not be as extreme as the heat wave of late July and early August, but will be noticeable given the more seasonable air of late," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Renee Duff.
Following a push of cool air in parts of the Northwest into Thursday, highs will trend upward.
This weekend, highs in the 90s F are projected for eastern Oregon and southern Idaho. Afternoon temperatures will approach 90 in Portland and 80 in Seattle.
Static West Heat

Heat will build over the Southwest as well.
"Temperatures over the interior valleys of California will reach the triple digits this weekend, especially on Sunday," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Maggie Samuhel.
A light flow of air from the interior to the coast will also push temperatures upward. Highs near 90 are forecast for downtown in Los Angeles this weekend.
"The pattern may limit the extent of morning low clouds to just the immediate beaches," Samuhel said.

The combination of sunshine, light winds and hot air will lead to deteriorating air quality due to existing wildfires in the region and major metro area pollutants.
More than 100 wildfires were active over the western United States as of Aug. 22., according to the Incident Information System.
The buildup of heat will also increase the risk of wildfire ignition. The large fires can generate their own wind and add to firefighting difficulties.
For the remainder of August, above-average temperatures are likely to continue over the western U.S. in general.
Static US Late August

The jet stream will be displaced well to the north over into western and central Canada for much of the balance of August. The jet stream is a high-speed river of air where jets cruise at. South of this river, warmth is common.
Normal temperatures trend downward at bit during late August. Temperatures during the period are likely to run 3 to 8 degrees above average.
For example, the average high in Las Vegas is about 100 during the part of August. Highs may be within a few degrees of 105 in the city. Temperatures may approach 110 on occasion in Phoenix. The average high in Phoenix is near 105.
The pattern may bring some days with highs near 80 in San Francisco. The average high is in the lower 70s.
Thunderstorms may be few and far between from Idaho, Nevada and western Arizona on west in the pattern for the balance of the month. Spotty storms are likely to continue farther to the east in the region.
