Central Europe Faces Weekend Severe Storms, Floods

Adverse weather threatens to ruin this weekend from southern France to northern Italy and Poland.
Communities in the vicinity of central Europe will become the target of violent thunderstorms and/or flash flooding this weekend as a potent cold front swings through.
The greatest threat for severe thunderstorms encompasses southern France Saturday afternoon and evening then will shift to northern Italy for Sunday through Sunday evening.
Cities in the danger zone include Toulouse, Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon, France, and Milan, Genoa, Venice and Bologna, Italy.
The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging thunderstorms, hail and flooding downpours. An isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

Meanwhile, torrential rain will spread across the Alps Saturday night through Sunday with amounts generally on the order of 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 inches).
With the majority of that rain falling in 8 to 12 hours for any one community, there is significant concern for flash flooding and mudslides. Such dangers will be greatest across southwestern-facing slope, where the highest rain totals will be measured.
While the most significant danger for severe weather and flooding will lie to the southwest, the northern extent of the storm system also threatens to ignite some drenching and gusty thunderstorms from southern Germany and northern Austria to central Poland Sunday afternoon.

Less-intense thunderstorms and showers will rattle the rest of Germany and westward to France and the United Kingdom this weekend, causing disruptions to outdoor activities. That includes the Wimbledon Championships.
It is not out of the question that an isolated thunderstorm drops pea-sized hail across South West England on Saturday.
Looking beyond the weekend, AccuWeather.com meteorologists will be monitoring the potential for the severe weather and flood threat to shift to eastern Europe on Monday. Places from the Balkans to around the border of Poland and Belarus may be threatened.
