Heavy snow showers will impact the Cascades and the Rockies on Tuesday, while a cold front will shift over the East Coast.
A low pressure system will slide southeastward over the Intermountain West and the northern Plains. Moderate to heavy snow showers will develop across the central and northern Rockies, while afternoon and evening snow showers will emerge over the northern and central Plains. Additionally, an onshore flow from the Pacific will usher heavy precipitation over portions of the Pacific Northwest. The heaviest rain will develop over western Washington, while high elevation snow showers can be expected across the northern Cascades. High pressure will keep conditions mostly clear across the Southwest on Tuesday. Temperatures are forecast to range between the 60s and 70s across the Desert Southwest.
Meanwhile, a low pressure system will move northeastward over eastern Canada. Light to moderate snow showers will trail this system over the upper Midwest, the Great Lakes and the Northeast. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will extend south southwestward over the Eastern Seaboard. Rain and thunderstorms will develop from Florida to the southern Mid-Atlantic. Heavy rain will bring a threat of flash flooding to northern Florida and southeast Georgia. A mixture of rain and snow will also develop across the southern and central Appalachians.
Bitter cold temperatures will return to the northern Plains and the upper Midwest as an arctic air mass sinks southward over the central third of the country.
