A tornado was confirmed Sunday afternoon in the area of rural Comanche and Erath counties in Texas, as a severe storm system passed over parts of the state and threatens to bring damaging hail and winds to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. No injuries were immediately reported in the aftermath of the tornado.
"Once
again today our concern involves these large, rotating thunderstorms
called supercells," said weather.com senior meteorologist Nick Wiltgen.
"The warm, unstable air is feeding very strong updrafts, causing rapid
thunderstorm development – and the way the winds are aligned is allowing
some of these storms to rotate, enhancing their potential for giant
hail and possibly tornadoes. We've been fortunate that we haven't seen
violent tornadoes near densely populated areas the last few days – but Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston are in play Sunday, so we are watching the situation closely."

Stephenville police say shelters have opened at the city library and other locations.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 23 North Texas counties, including Dallas, Hood, Tarrant, and Johnson Counties until 11 p.m. Sunday night, according to NBC DFW.
