WeatherWhys for February 22,2016 from accuweather.com

The auroras that caused a beautiful scene in the high latitudes are caused by collisions between fast-moving electrons from space and the oxygen and nitrogen in Earth's upper atmosphere. Auroras usually occur in ring-shaped areas that are roughly 2,500 miles in diameter around the Earth's poles. The spectacular light show is known as aurora borealis in the Northern Hemisphere and the aurora australis in the Southern Hemisphere.
