Wintry weather marked the first days of autumn across parts of the Intermountain West as snow mixed in with the changing fall foliage.
"A strong storm system barreled into the West this past week and brought a shot of cooler air from Canada which lead to some snow across the higher elevations of the Rockies," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Jordan Root. "Snow reached to elevations as low as 7,000 feet, making it the first snow of the season for some. Laramie, Wyoming measured around 2 inches of snow."
Some locations in Utah reported anywhere from half a foot of snow to a foot of snow.
With the transition from summer actives to ski season getting underway soon, the snow was a welcome sight for ski resorts, including Steamboat Resort in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, which announced its first snowfall of the season.
Park City Mountain Resort in Utah also received its first snow of the season on Saturday. Runners who were competing in the North Face Endurance Challenge Series at the mountain were rerouted due to whiteout conditions near the top.
Travel problems were reported due to snowy and icy conditions in spots.
The La Plata County Sheriff's Office in Colorado responded to several stranded vehicles on U.S. Highway 550 on Molas and Coal Bank passes on Friday.
"It is time to check your car's tires and emergency supplies. Winter is here," the sheriff's office said.
In Rocky Mountain National Park, while fall weather was observed at lower elevations, park officials said it felt like winter at elevations above 10,000 feet as they were forced to institute several temporary road closures.
