A cold frontal boundary will generate heavy rain over the Plains on Saturday, while a blast of cool air spreads across the Northeast.
A well-defined low pressure system will move northeastward from the northern high Plains to south central Canada. This system will produce gusty winds and thunderstorms from the upper Intermountain West to the upper Mississippi Valley. Flash flooding will be a concern for eastern Montana and northwest North Dakota. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will stretch south southwestward from the Dakotas to the southern high Plains. As this frontal boundary transitions eastward, it will collide with warm and humid air. This interaction will lead to moderate to heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms across a large span of the Plains. Prolonged heavy rain will bring threats of flash flooding to north central Texas, central Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, northwest Missouri, southeast Nebraska, Iowa, southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Temperatures are forecast to drop 10 to 20 degrees below normal over the Intermountain West. This cool down will allow for high elevation snow showers to develop into the central and northern Rockies.
Meanwhile, a cold frontal boundary will usher cool and fairly dry air over a large portion of the Northeast. Warm and humid air will remain in place over most of the Deep South and the Southeast on Sunday.
