Three Things To Know About the Weather This Week

There are some common weather themes in the forecast from coast to coast this week, due to the overall jet stream pattern that we expect.
One southward dip in the jet stream will keep the West Coast stormy, while another allows the Northeast to remain chilly. In between, however, parts of the nation's midsection and the South can keep shorts and t-shirts handy.

The weather pattern this week will favor stormy conditions in the West and cool weather in the Northeast due to southward dips in the jet stream. A ridge in between will keep the Plains and South mild.

Here are the weather stories we are watching this week.

1.) Fall Temperatures Grip Northeast and Great Lakes

Chilly Temperatures in the Northeast

There will be no return to last week's record warmth in the Northeast during the week ahead.
A southward dip in the jet stream that brought cooler temperatures and even snow to the Northeast over the weekend will remain in place early this week. Late in the week it will be reinforced, keeping the cooler weather in place.

This means we will see temperatures near or slightly below average at times this week in both the Northeast and parts of the Great Lakes.
Boston will see temperatures mostly in the 40s and 50s this week.
New York City will mainly be in the 50s with lows diving toward the 30s mid to late week. This would be the first 30s of the season in the Big Apple.

.) Warmth Dominates Parts of the West, Plains and South

Forecast Highs Compared to Average Thursday

For portions of the western, central and southern United States, the final full week of October will feature warmer than average temperatures overall. High temperatures at times this week will be 5-20 degrees above late-October averages.
This continues the widespread above-average warmth that has dominated the central and eastern states so far this October.
Leading the pack is the Desert Southwest, where highs in the 90s are forecast this week in Phoenix.
Along the Front Range, Denver can expect highs in the 70s all week long. Average highs there are in the low 60s this time of year.

Forecast Highs

Highs in the 70s and 80s will be common throughout the South this week.
Parts of Texas, including Dallas and Houston, may rise into the middle to upper 80s late this week.

3.) Wet Week in the West

Forecast Rain and Snow

With the jet stream diving southward off the West Coast, several low pressure systems will impact areas from Washington to California this week.
The wet conditions will continue into Monday from northern California to Washington as a low pressure system slides northward off the coast.
Two more low pressure systems will then affect the region through late week.
A vigorous storm system will slide inland Thursday into Friday, spreading welcomed rain throughout much of California. This could bring more rain as far south as Los Angeles.
