Winter Storm Blanche to Bring More Snow to Northern Maine

Winter Storm Blanche has brought snow from the mountain West to the northern Plains and northern New England the last several days. The heaviest additional snow will affect northern Maine through Thursday, while conditions improve in the northern Plains.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are posted for northern Maine by the National Weather Service. All winter weather alerts in the northern Plains have been canceled.

Winter Weather Alerts

Blanche brought up to 24 inches of snow to California's Sierra Nevada near the Lake Tahoe area over the weekend. The storm also produced a foot or more of snow in parts of Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Idaho and northern New Mexico.
The highest total from Blanche, so far, was estimated at 62 inches near Elk Mountain, Wyoming.

In the northern Plains, locally up to 24 inches of snow piled up in North Dakota near Van Hook Park, while South Dakota's Black Hills saw up to 36 inches.

More Heavy Snow For Maine

Another round of snow from Blanche is headed for northern Maine through Thursday.
Up to 15 inches of snow fell in northern Maine from the first round of snow Blanche produced there Tuesday into early Wednesday.

Snowfall Forecast

Another 8-12 inches of snow (locally higher) may fall in northern Maine from this second round of snow pushing through into Thursday.

Northern Plains, Upper Midwest Snow Winds Down

The worst of Blanche's snow in the northern Plains and Upper Midwest has tapered off.
Some additional light snow will affect the area through Wednesday night.

Snow Totals and Reports From Winter Storm Blanche

Snow from Blanche in the western states was caused by a potent southward plunge of the jet stream that pivoted through that region and into the central United States.
The energy associated with that jet-stream dip spawned an area of surface low pressure in the Plains that brought heavy snow and gusty winds to the Dakotas.
Moisture from Blanche also pushed well east of that low, producing wintry weather in interior New England, particularly in northern Maine.

• Arizona: 10 inches near the Arizona Snowbowl; 5.5 inches in Flagstaff
• California: 24 inches at Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort
• Colorado: 28 inches near Wolf Creek Pass
• Idaho: 13.5 inches south of Pocatello
• Iowa: 1.0 inch in Estherville
• Maine: 15 inches in Ludlow
• Montana: 7 inches near Big Sky
• Nevada: 10 inches at Mount Rose Ski Area
• New Mexico: Estimated 14 inches at Taos
• North Dakota: 24 inches near Van Hook Park
• South Dakota: Up to 36 inches near Cheyenne Crossing.
• Utah: 41 inches at Alta
• Wyoming: Estimated 62 inches south-southeast of Elk Mountain
