According to Lt. Steve Brown of the Orange Beach Police Department, the bodies of Steward Spencer III, 19, and his brother Joshua Spencer, 12, were recovered early Saturday. While Brown did not identify the names of the victims, the family released their names to WKRG.
"It's a tragic incident," Brown told Alabama.com.
The boys were vacationing with their family from the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, area when the incident occurred. The teens reportedly disappeared around 5 p.m. after going for a swim. A search ensued, and the bodies were recovered about 6 a.m. Saturday.
Brown noted that there were red flag warnings on the beach Friday, indicating a high risk of rip currents.
"Whether it's green or red or any color in between, you have to be cautious when you enter the gulf," Brown said.
